The students are fully engrossed in their work while refining their routines. Being able to meet weekly with me to discuss about their personal work progress, each student continues to move towards having their work organized and having their time managed appropriately.
Every afternoon the Coyotes get an opportunity to engage in silent reading for half hour. A book collection of Roald Dahl, Narnia series by C.S. Lewis, and Grace and Courtesy books are in open access to them. During this time they can access any other book from different areas of the classroom he / she finds interesting. Matilda by Roald Dahl is also being read out to the children by Mr. Denis in the mornings. Many of our Coyote students have been going out to the library to gain access to more literature and research support for their projects in class.
In Botany, the students are learning about and receiving lessons about needs of a plant. In such lessons, they are learning the various aspects of the plant, including the functions of the leaf and the root, as well as other functions such as Stomata and Oxygen. This is where the children learn about Botany with hands on experiments; through the experiments, students are learning various classifications as well as how the leaves, roots, vains, etc. all work together in a plant and form hypotheses and conclusions along the way.
Writing and reading are in full force! Site word games, puzzle words, fluency practice, etc have all become games on a daily basis! It is humbling to see such progress happening in the room in our second semester!
Our elementary students have been visiting our Primary classes to read books that are inspirational. Stories that involve Grace and Courtesy Lessons, building community and Friendships, and modeling mutual respect. This has been a positive experience for both the Coyotes as well as Children's House children; not only do our Coyotes get the opportunity to practice their public speaking skills, they also build on their reading fluency and ability to keep a crowd captivated and engaged. These visits help to build community between grade levels and are stepping stones to building a strong Creo Community.
In Geometry with our older children we are working on performing geometric construction according to specific instructions. Only using a straight edge and a compass children are coming to the realization how many shapes and forms could be invented just by using these two simple instruments.
We hope everyone will have a pleasant weekend!
