We hope you had a joyous holiday season with your families. We enjoyed hearing the stories about your unique traditions, trips and family gatherings from the children. The new year kicked off wonderfully as the children were eager to return to work and their social environment. Over the last two weeks we were excited and enjoyed celebrating a sixth birthday and we had a fluffy show and share! The children adored both experiences.
Some of the Gray Fox children expressed great interest in learning more about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as how people were in the US during that time. They were astonished by how far we have progressed as a society. It was fascinating to hear their discussions about the importance of being peaceful and loving one another regardless of where we live, what we wear, eat, look like, etc. In a Montessori environment, the children learn to live in harmony and respect one another as a community parallel to focusing on their individual needs. The enormous amount of empathy the children demonstrate for one another pays homage to Dr. King's dreams.
Thank you to all who attended our classroom meeting discussing the Exercises for the Education of the Senses and Sensorial Development. Each child around the world goes through sensitive periods, or critical periods, that open windows of opportunity where experiences have greater impact on certain areas of brain development. During sensitive periods, the brain is most likely to strengthen important connections (build new neuropathways) and eliminate (prune) unneeded ones in specific parts of the brain. The Montessori Exercises for the Education of the Senses are geared toward specific purposes to aid in this development. The purposes include development of: recall, a lifetime tendency toward order and precision, and preparation for academics, culture and the imagination. The are highly correlated to the development of a mathematical mind and abstract thinking. They are scientifically designed, precise and promote experimentation and exploration as the child discovers each intricate detail over time.
Looking forward to all the treasures 2016 will continue to bring,
Ms. Lauren and Ms. Leydi
