Thank you to the parents who attended our classroom meeting on Wednesday. We discussed the second component of the language progression in Children's House. The preparation for writing includes preparation of the mind and preparation of the hand. Once the child is able to recognize the sounds of the language, trace the sandpaper letters and break apart sounds of a word (I-spy) they are well prepared to explode into writing and reading.
The exercises of reading follow the same path as the development of speech. That is; words, sentences, grammar and syntax. We begin with decoding: phonetic reading then introduce phonograms, puzzle words and spelling dictionaries. Parallel to decoding is classified reading and interpretive reading. The third path includes function of words (i.e., noun, article, adjective, conjunction, preposition, verb, adverb, etc.) Also in the third path the child is able to work with sentence analysis (comprehension, analysis of sentence structure and style), and word study (prefixes, suffixes, plural, singular, feminine, masculine, etc.)
Each step in the process is important because each step helps the child to conquer one aspect of language consciousness. When all of the steps are followed, the child can come to what Dr. Montessori calls "total reading." This means, the written language will convey three things; meaning, feeling and style. Style implies the love of language.
Over the past two weeks, we were very busy as always! We were so honored to celebrate Brooke's 5th birthday with her and her mother, Angel! We hope you had the happiest day!
It has been delightful to have the parents observing and I have been enjoying our conferences! Thank you for all of the positive feedback and for paying attention to the observation guidelines. A few key points: please do not stand up, move or talk to the children. If they speak to you, please kindly respond "I am here to watch you work." This includes responding to your own child. Thank you so much for understanding, this will help the children maintain a normal work period without disruption.
Last week, we welcomed another child into our classroom! Giuliana, you bring us so much joy each day, we are so happy you are in our group! If you see her or her parents in the hallway, please introduce yourself! Welcome to our Creo family!
We have been talking about President's Day in the classroom. Mainly, breaking down what the President's responsibility to our country is and our former presidents. The children have been asking about Valentine's Day. We have been studying the origin of Valentine's Day and the importance of being respectful, showing love and being good friends all year long. After all, that's what it is all about! Next week we will be celebrating Chinese New Year!!! If you have any information/Chinese artifacts this would be an ideal 'show and share' and harmoniously compliment our discussions.
Thank you again for your support and partnership in your child's education.
